A solid blackened ash credenza floats upon a mirrored base. The solid doors are scored vertically across the grain, and details of a cliff’s facade are carved into them half by machine, half by hand, replicating the textures of it’s crumbling surface. Both monumental and subtle, the shale credenza is as striking from afar as from up close. Patterns within the carving and the wood’s grain create optical illusions depending on the lights orientation. The piece is available with a black base or mirrored base, made to order and slightly customizable. Due to the hand-carved facade, no two pieces are quite the same.

The Shale Collection consists of a credenza and a coffee table, made with solid Ash wood and mirror or chrome plated steel. The particularity of these pieces lies within the textures, one reminiscent of stone, hand carved in solid ash, and the other cool and crisp, either mirror or chrome, for the credenza and table respectively.
The Shale Collection's name was inspired by the cliffs outside Simon Johns' studio, in the Missisquoi Valley in Quebec. Shale is a type of rock formation that tends to split and erode in layers, leaving behind a layered and random composition of textures. The mapping of the composition of this cliff was sketched on to the two pieces of the collection, and carved out in layers, with a router and a chisel.
